almost a year ago my girlfriend started nagging me—i say that lovingly—about how she needed a printer for school. i said no, and she said yes, so i ended up scouring nearby electronics stores and internet shops for a cheap printer/scanner with good reviews. i found a decent deal on Amazon Japan that bundled the MP600 w/two ink sets for a reasonable price, and now, almost a year later, i’m having some slight problems with the Canon brand all-in-one printer.

at the time of purchase, reviewers were saying nothing but good things about the printer, so i punched in my credit card numbers and ordered away. then recently, the machine has begun refusing to read some ink cartridges. official Canon ink cartridges. weird, right? whenever we tried to print something, error message U150 would pop up on the the LCD screen saying that “the following ink tank cannot be recognized,” and would highlight the black and yellow carts.

i searched further into the problem, and those same sites where reviewers had been giving positive reviews had turned into many people with negative complaints about the MP600’s print-head problems. the only solution, if an ink tank is not being read, is to replace the cartridge with a new one. fortunately, a lot of people have reported that they were able to get Canon to ship them a brand new ink cartridge at no expense, but who wants to go through that trouble every time this problem arises?

i was able to fix my problem by simply replacing the half-full black and yellow ink tanks with new ones, but i feel that i’ve been duped out of my money. these stupid ink-jet printer inks are not cheap, and now i’ve got two wasted cartridges sitting in my desk drawer taking up space. i’d call Canon about it, but again, i really would rather not go through the trouble. if i buy something, i want it working.
